CancalmCBD® Where do we stand in the submission of Novel Foods Application for CBD?

Cancalm®, can assure you that we have the UKs largest growing, processing and extraction facilities of cannabis and have now announced our support for the Food Standards Agency’s “novel food application process” for CBD products in the United Kingdom.

Under these set requirements, any CBD food products failing to have a validated submission before the 31 March 2021 deadline will be taken off the shelves!

Cancalm® can ASSURE you that clarification has been provided by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and that we are of fully in support of protecting CBD from enforcement and moving the CBD industry in a direction that means more safety standards to be met, ensuring you, the consumer are taking exactly what is said on the label.

So to keep you updated, from 31 March 2021, the FSA have stressed they will remove any unregistered CBD products from sale.

The exemption supported by the Novel Foods Application by Cancalm® CBD will allow our products to be sold freely without restriction under food law.

“A novel food, is defined as any food that had not been consumed regularly by humans in the EU before 15 May 1997. However, many humans have consumed hemp for much longer, hemp-derived CBD is a relatively new product.”

Our novel food application required an in-depth chemical composition of our Cancalm® products and evidence that shows it can be consistently manufactured. We also must submit safety data to prove that our product is safe to consume and that it is also safe when formulated into food products.

Cancalm® CBD have been working on this submission for fifteen months and expect to complete the submission later this year.

In a nutshell, Cancalm® CBD won’t be going anywhere! We are here for the long run. So, you can Keep Calm…our products won’t be going anywhere, how cliché!?

Lets talk CBD Expiry dates

Can Cancalm® CBD Oil & CBD Products Expire? With only the smallest amount of care and attention, you can ensure that your CBD oil and CBD based products stay at the highest quality for the longest amount of time by following Cancalm® CBD aftercare advice!

So here it is a blog, especially tailored for the aftercare of your CBD products!

People usually take CBD Oil sublingually (under the tongue) every morning from a 10ml bottle as they wake up & every evening before bed as part of a daily routine.

So as CBD is regularly used, if taken correctly and almost “religiously!” the product should usually will be consumed within a month or two meaning you won’t have to worry about the shelf-life of your CBD oil!

However, if you have purchased a bigger bottle or if you use your CBD as and when you feel you need it, then you may need to know the best way to prevent your CBD from degrading.

Cancalm®  Oil Shelf Life

From the point CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant and placed into a carrier oil, its shelf-life will generally be around 18 months. When stored in in a cool, dark and dry place.

So ensure, you: –

Keep out of direct sunlight & Keep in a cool place – This can be achieved by keeping it refrigerated or at the very least keeping the bottle out of direct sunlight and away from any heat.

Its unlikely that you will be storing your Cancalm® CBD for years. If so, store CBD in your freezer. (Ensure it has fully thawed before you use). If CBD isn’t kept cool the CBD will gradually convert into other cannabinoids causing the strength of your CBD oil to drop!

Minimize your CBD’s exposure to air – Air can slowly deteriorate your CBD product. All CBD oil products should come in air-tight containers.  So, when using it, you should minimise the amount of time that the lid is off. Also when the lid is returned to the product make sure it is completely sealed or screwed on.

Store upright – This might sound obvious! Store your bottle upright! If not the CBD may come into contact will other materials.

Avoid contamination – If your CBD comes with a pipette dropper for using sublingually (under the tongue), then ensure that you don’t touch the dropper into your mouth. This could pass germs into the liquid which may deteriorate. Also ensure that you have clean and dry hands prior to using CBD-based products to reduce germs and water entering the product.

Some general tips for keeping your CBD at the best quality are:

Keep out of the reach of children – This one goes without saying, you should be keeping all your supplements and medicines out of the reach of children, this also goes for your CBD oil. Whilst CBD doesn’t have a known point in which you can overdose and won’t cause your children to get ‘high’ or harm them, it will also stop contamination of your product.

Freeze your CBD ONLY when necessary – To ensure that you can also use your CBD product, don’t always store in -0 conditions. There is just no need. This will stop you wasting time in thawing it every time you need to use it.

Throw your CBD product away IF expired – If your product has reached its expiry then this means that we can no longer guarantee the product is safe to use.  So ensure you aren’t using expired CBD products and have used them completely prior to their expiry date.

We hope you now understand the expiry dates of your CBD oil and CBD products!

Since the influx of cannabis-inspired products on the market, CBD is a new ingredient to many consumers, however hempseed oil has around for decades sold at health food shops and is used in cooking and skincare.

When CBD oil and hempseed oil are discussed, there lays the foundation for a lot of misleading information. So they are often confused as the same thing.

So lets make these easy and break it down for you…

Averaged about 17% tetrahydrocannabinol (

THC), the psychoactive compound that makes a person feel “high,” in 2017

Averaged less than 0.15% CBD in 2014
Cannabis has medicinal and therapeutic uses for chronic pain, mental health, and illnesses
Hemp plant
Has to contain less than 0.3% THC to be sold legally
Averages at least 12%–18% CBD
Stalks of the hemp plant can produce clothing, rope, paper, fuel, home insulation, and much more
Hemp seeds
0% THC
Have no more than trace amounts of CBD
Seeds are cold-pressed for oil production; the oil can be used in cooking (as in hempseed milk and granola), beauty products, and even paint

Why does this matter so much in the beauty world?

CBD oil and hempseed oil are both popular ingredients used in topical skincare and beauty products.

Hempseed oil, in particular, is known for unclogging pores, anti-inflammatory properties and is deeply moisturising. Hempseed oil can be added to a product or just used by itself as an oil.

New research is regularly appearing proving the skin-related benefits of CBD. What we know so far is it’s been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory, like hempseed oil. It reportedly helps in healing:

Misleading Marketing tactics behind hempseed oil…

With the CBD trend becoming so popular, some beauty brands are jumping on the chance to sell their “cannabis-infused” beauty products but mixing or congregating the terms CBD and hemp seed up — intentionally or unintentionally.

Since CBD and hempseed oil are in the same cannabis family, they’re often incorrectly marketed as the same thing. Why would a brand do this?

One reason is that consumers are willing to pay more for CBD oil, which is a pretty expensive ingredient in comparison to hempseed oil.

It’s as easy as pie for any brand to add and label “hempseed oil” to a product, surround it with marijuana leaves, and highlight the word cannabis or hemp to make consumers think they’re purchasing a CBD product when actually it contains NO CBD at all. And there you are… paying a for a product you have been misled to think includes a premium ingredient!

Some brands may also market their products as hempseed-based to avoid Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulationsTrusted Source on cannabis- or marijuana-derived products.

So how can you tell what you’re purchasing?

It’s pretty simple, actually. Check the ingredient list…

Hempseed oil will be listed as cannabis sativa seed oil.

CBD will usually be listed as cannabidiol, full-spectrum hemp, hemp oil, PCR (phytocannabinoid-rich) or PCR hemp extracts.

Be CBD Savvy…

While companies aren’t required to list the milligrams of CBD or hemp on the bottle, it’s become a common practice to do so. If they’re not listed, you should wonder what’s in that bottle you’re paying for???

The FDA has sent warning letters to some companies for illegally selling CBD products and falsely advertising them as safe or as effective medical treatments. That’s another reason why doing your own consumer research is vital.

It’s so important to be an educated, savvy consumer. Don’t fall into the trap of the “hemp based product hype!”

CBD is not the same thing as THC.

CBD is just one of the 104 chemical compounds that is found in the composition of a hemp plant.

It is extracted using a process called distillation which turns the cannabidiol into oil. CBD is a totally different compound to Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) the psychoactive compound found in cannabis creating the feeling of euphoria, the high.

THC is illegal in the UK.

CBD oil is legally bought as long as it has been derived from one of the 63 industrial EU approved hemp strains.

In order for CBD oil to be “legal” it must not contain more than >0.2% THC.

At this point in time in the UK, we are unallowed to make medical claims regarding CBD.

We can provide research, links and show evidence, however we can not make medical claims ourselves.

There is oodles of scientific research that you can go away and find out for yourselves that concentrate on the potential beneficial effects CBD may have. So far… the results speak for themselves!

Around the globe regulations are beginning to relax… CBD is also now legal in many parts of Europe and the USA. The “Farm Bill” become legislation at the end of 2018, so licensed farmers can grow and transport hemp. This is big deal as it has been illegal since the 1930’s!

With regulations relaxing and laws changing, other nations seem to be following trend. CBD is now becoming recognised in mainstream society, its looking like its here to stay!

A quick disclaimer; Cancalm® Ltd CBD products are not intended to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent any disease or condition. They are a food supplement.

The obvious springs to mind… When CBD comes up in conversation there is often common misconceptions and presumptions about the effects CBD can have on you; For example, it is often presumed that CBD’s link to the Cannabis plant means it would contraindicate being focused and maintain concentration as its assumed it has effects similar to THC, this is not the case at all.

As many people understand THC (the psychoactive element of the cannabis plant) can cause a disruption to focus and concentration, people assume CBD will have this same effect. This is not the case, CBD’s chemical compound inhibits it from binding to CB1 receptors in the brain (those responsible for motivation and mood), with the same affinity as THC.

In 2018, the WHO (World Health Organisation) conducted a full review of CBD. After going through all current research with a fine tooth comb they came to the conclusion “CBD exhibits no effects in effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential” the report also stated “to date, there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD”.

So we now know that CBD doesn’t appear to have any negative impact on a person’s mental capacity, the question CAN CBD IMPROVE OUR ABILITY TO FOCUS? Can be questioned…

In order to answer this, we need to identify the things that affect our ability to focus and concentrate efficiently.

This could be due to something as plain and simple as your TV playing in the background or the builders making a racket outside your house on a Sunday morning!

Even the slightest noise can be distracting, and as you would – think the obvious right? Remove the distraction… but it isn’t just physical or technological distractions that can prevent us from giving our all important tasks our full attention. Sleep deprived? Stressed?… neurological and cognitive disorders also impact severely on our ability to maintain focus.

It is published in Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment articles such as this that a sleep deprivation causes a decrease in cognitive function, simultaneously increasing your levels of cortisol! Yep! That pesky stressor hormone once again!

A second study found these heightened levels of the hormone cortisol decreases attention. So combining no sleep and stress your surely heading for a “train wreck”.

So attention has clearly turned to CBD when looking for natural remedies for insomnia and stress… although there are no specific results showing CBD’s direct impact on our ability to focus, there are plenty of studies on what CBD can do to the decrease the negative impacts of the underlying factors that significantly disrupt our ability to concentrate.

Does that make sense?
